Infants learn speech by watching talking face

How do infants learn speech through their sensations? Research found that not only the auditory information is involved in the learning process, the visual information from the mouth also plays a critical role.

Infants were found to shift their attention from a speaker’s eyes to the mouth between 4 and 8 months of age, the period when they start imitating speech-like syllables. This focus on the mouth provides them with multi-sensory input. When they look at the mouth while hearing at the same time, the information from two sources help them learn better how to use their mouths to produce sounds.
